Freud (1915) described the conscious mind, which consists of all the mental processes of which we are aware. For Freud, the child loves himself first then later learns to love others and sacrifice his ego for others. Egoism has taught the child to love in brief – he loves because of need, as he cannot do without others. In children, the important has remained in memory but is represented as unimportant causing distortion of reality. It is inaccessible and belongs to the unconscious.
Man loves the process of attaining, but does not quite like to have attained, and that, of course, is very absurd. In fact, man is a comical creature, there seems to be a kind of jest in it all. But yet mathematical certainty is, after all, something insufferable. – (Fyodor Dostoevsky 1821 – 1881)
The Unconscious
- Special psychic realm with wish impulses of its own
- Own methods of expression with psychic method strange to itself
- In our psychic life is the infantile
- The dream nightly leads us back to the infantile stage
- Frightful evil is simply the original, primitive, infantile side of our psyche
Perhaps Suffering is just as great a benefit to him as well-being? Man is sometimes extraordinarily, passionately, in love with suffering, and that is a fact. – (Fyodor Dostoevsky 1821 – 1881)
Consciousness is the greatest misfortune for man. […]As far as my personal opinion is concerned, to care only for well-being seems to me positively ill-bred. Whether its good or bad, it is sometimes very pleasant, too, to smash things. – (Fyodor Dostoevsky 1821 – 1881)
Separation of the same sex
- Motives – Found more offensive for love between parents and children to be lacking
- Mother-daughter: Rival objects to being displaced
- Daughters find the mother the authority and suppress will and carry sexual abstention from sexual liberty and social demands
- Father-Son: Forbid early sexual satisfaction
- Every social restriction bars the freedom to will
- Mother-son & Father-daughter are less restrained
The dream work is incomprehensible and archaic, it extends back to conditions of our intellectual development, that we have long progressed. Symbol representation before the language of thought. The relations between dreams and thoughts disappear by dream work. Anxiety is the mark which shows that suppressed wish is stronger than censorship – if censorship feels powerless it destroys sleep.
Speak deferentially, listen respectfully, follow his command, and accord with him in everything. He will never imagine you might be in conflict with him. Our treacherous measures will then be settled. – Tai Kung, Six Secret Teachings ( circa fourth century B.C.)
