• A body is a machine blindly programmed by selfish genes 
• ESS Strategy – refers to a blind unconscious behaviour program
  • Faithful presence/deceit but a strong desire, and motive to desert
  • Sexually attractive – advantageous 
• Selection favours memes that exploit the cultural environment to their advantage 
  • A fundamental element of life is replication 
    • When we die we leave genes/memes / good ideas/contributions to culture/tune/ poem 
  • The cultural environment consists of other memes being selected 
• ‘Nice Strategy’ is defined as that is never the first to defect. It is capable of defecting but only in retaliation 
  • Pre-failed and most successful 
  • Forgiving strategy – may retaliate but has a short memory 
  • Iterated and repeated genes are important for strategies – the assessment of end-game is an important part 
• The success of non-envious, forgiving, niceness also applies in the world of nature 
  • Conditions – long shadow of future
